Terence

Name of Roman/Irish Origin.
Famously the name of Roman Satirist.
Means gracious and tender.

I think that people do grow into their names however I feel that they grow into the reputation that goes with their names.  I think that Kates, Sarahs, Claires etc... tend to be a certain type of person more through a cultural unconscious than by actively growing into the meaning of the name.  I think that as names, characteristics too, are passed through generations of families.

In terms of my name.  I'm not sure I'm that gracious as I have difficulty with accepting praise and showing gratitude.  Tender?  Well what does that even mean?

  1. Bianca

    Name of Latin origin.
Made famous by former rolling stone Bianca Jagger
    Means "White or Fair skinned"

I think some people do grow into their names, and usually those people are who were named once they were born, i think sometimes parents pick the name of their child before they are born and it could be a name they do not suit, but then i agree with the fact that names could represent a type of person, this could be subconsciously! Sometimes you look at someone and think, they would suit a certain name based on the fact that they remind you of someone with that name.

In terms of my name. I am nor Latin, White or Fair skinned so god knows where my mum and dad got that name, they possibly heard it and liked it, maybe they knew someone with that name already and they liked that specific person. Im not too sure weather they had researched it before naming me ¬_¬

  2. Samantha

    Name of English origin
it was made famous by the actress Samantha Eggar who acted Bewithched in the 1960's
means Listener of God and the end -antha means flower in Greek

It is also said to be the feminine name for Samuel.I think a person grows into their name. I had this name chosen for me from another actress named Samantha-Joanne Jones which means my mother found the actresses of good nature and character in their roles. This is so because no parent wants a bad name meaning for their child. I think I have grown into this name because I do believe in God and all his ways and am also a good listener to people. Even though it is my first time to get the meaning of my name.

I do not think I take the Greek part of me being called a flower because people look at me and say i look like a tigeress.

  3. OLUWASEUN
    Gender: Masculine & Feminine
    Usage: Yoruba
Means "we thank God" in Yoruba

i dont think we grow into our names but instead as we grow, people see qualities in us that they then link to other people of the same name, for example i have often been told by members of my family (mostly my grandmother) that people with my name are often mischievous or stubborn and while i myself had to agree with this to some extent, i also realised that someone who didn't bear that name could just as easily share those qualities with me...and also surely the other people called "seun" have a dozen other qualities I don't have?

    my question is;
Is it fair to say that societies' views about people "growing into their names" is just part of the human nature of categorising people into sections and qualities that we can deal with or relate to?

  4. English Name Meaning - a variant of Victorius. Borne by Queen
Victoria was the Roman goddess of victory

Basically names are for identification, but if you think about it, most parents do not think deeply into the names they give to thier children, they just name them after a role model or give them a name they're fond of and sometimes the name of some babies are already deicided before they are born. however depending on the baby's personality as he/she grows, there may be some similarities in the name and behaviour.

In my country, babies are sometimes named according to the status of thier parents or family when they were born for example if the family has just enjoyed a great loss before the baby was born then the baby would be named along the lines of comfort and it will be believed that everyone met by that baby in thier life would be comforted by his/her presence, and so the child may decide to act like his/her name and endeavour to always bring comfort into the lives of who ever he/she meets. This leads me to ask the question -
To what extent does the meaning of our names affect the people around us?

  5. Jessica

means: Rich. God beholds. The daughter of Shylock in Shakespeares play The Merchant of Venice
    origin: hebrew

I think it vairies whether you grown into your name some people do because of there personalities because some peoples names relfect on there personality. But others Is just a name to be called by and because people don't believe theve grown into there name the change it.

In terms of my name It says I am rich? I wish but with my name I personaly think it goes with the way I look and my personality but other people don't think so because verious times in the past I have been called rebecca? by different people! But funny enough my mum and dad was going to call me rebecca?

  6. lewis means famous warrior and is also German

Medieval English form of LOUIS. A famous bearer was Lewis Carroll (1832-1898), the author of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. This was also the surname of C. S. Lewis (1898-1963), the author of the 'Chronicles of Narnia'.

we just dont grow into our names we just get to familiar to the people we see with that name an assume other people with the same name dont look like it.

can u tell someones name from their characteristics, personality and life style??

  7. Betty
    Consecrated To God
    Gender: Female
    Origin: Hebrew
    Usage:English

I thought the websites were biased in a way because I couldn't find the meaning of my name but i actually could'nt so i had to use my middle name

in my opinion i would say we do in some way grow into our names because when i do something good people will say you are a blessing and im glad you got named that because your name suits you!
which is really annoying because it means i have to act in a certain way to keep up that reputation of it,but if i was the opposite of what i am people would find ot strange if i was called blessing and i was a horrible person.

well my mum and dad said they named me blessing because when i was born i was a blessing to them and the family and i would be to the people who are around me fot the rest of their life and i still am a blessing yay!

  9. Andrew
    Manly, Courageous
    Gender: Male
    Origin: Greek ,Biblical, English, Scottish

I thought that is was wierd that i found that my name has diffrent origin's, i thought my name was originaly Scottish, but then became aware that my name came from the Greek name Ανδρεας (Andreas)and that Andrew is an adaptation of this and this is why it has several diffent origins.

I think that a name helps you become who you are, but not by its meaning. Names are just lables, although they can shape who you are they don't make you what they mean.

I asked my mum and dad why they decided to name me Andrew and they said that they wanted to use a manly name that could help shape me growing up. They also said they had chosen it become it was a more unique name at the time. I kinda laughted when they said that due to the fact the meaning of my name.

To what extent are names just lables?

  11. The Name Amy means...
    Beloved
    Gender: Female
    Origin: Latin

I found this information on the first website. I alredy knew this information because its something i have looked up when i was younger.

I found out that my name is the meaning love or a short form of Amelia which itself is a form of Emily, feminine form of the Latin Emil industrious or work. It may also have been possibly derived from the Roman family name Aemilius, which means rival.

My opinion is that how can we be judged on just our names? Not every Amy in the world has the same personality, they cant all be beloved. It depends whether someone grows into their name as people who dont tend to change it when they get older. Names are only for identification and as we grow up we either like the name we were given by our parents or dont.

To what extent can we believe this is what our names really mean?

  12. Paul - Small or Humble
    Scott - A Scotsman

Generally, I don't think our names have a great effect on our personalities. Possibly, if one was given a Biblical or Sacred name, the person may feel obliged to do the name justice by acting correctly, but most people don't even know what their names mean so how can it have an effect?
I am the 3rd generation of Paul, my father is Paul and his father also. I definitely think that I have many of their characteristics, but that's genetic, it would be the same whether I was called Paul or something else.
Also, I have no control over my size (though I am quite small!) so my name obviously doesn't have an impact on this, but I don't think that my name could give me a 'humble' personality or otherwise. Maybe I'm being ignorant, but I just don't see it happening.

  13. Steven

In Greek, the name Steven means- crowned one. Other origins for the name Steven include - Greek, English. The name Steven is most often used as a boy name or male name.

I don't think I fit into this meaning very well, becaused 'Crowned one' sounds like something to do with royality, or some kind of higher power, but I'm obviously not royality, or of a higher power (Nor do I have any interest in being so)

  14. Amy
    Beloved
    Gender- Female
    Origin- Latin

My name is also referred to mean love and is affectionate.

I dont think that we can relate these meaning to our names and the type of person I am because everyone is affectionate and loving to a certain extent.

How true is it to say that the meanings of our names are accurate to us and our personalities.

  15. pamela
    name of greek origin
invented in the late 16th century by poet sir philip sidney for use in his poem"ARCADIA"
    meaning:Honey

it is true that people grow into their names, and it has make me understand that, most people names stand for who they are and how they behave in their society

my parents gave me this name because of a very close of theirs who died at birth, so they both decided to name me after her in other to always remember her, and this make me ask this question

To what extent is it good for parents to name thier child after their dead friends or lost friends.
