Science - Any Good?

Find a scientist, inventor or theorist and post what they are notable for.

You must choose an discoveryinvention or theory that you think important and justify why.

Margaret Thatcher pioneered the development of the process that allows manufacturers to put air into ice cream...but I don't think it's that important!

  1. Johannes Gutenberg - notable for introducing modern book printing

    I think this is very important because it allowed material such as novels and scriptures to be distributed at cheaper prices, which meant the lower classes could afford to buy such things for their homes. also it allowed authors to create more pieces of work.

  2. ELECTRICITY-Although Ancient Egypt already had the idea of electricity, it was in the 18th century that Benjamin Franklin made an extensive research about electricity.

    I think this discovery is very important because it has gone a great deal to enable advancement in other inventions and is an essential tool in our everyday lives

  3. John Strognofe invented the first protable camera in 1685

    I think this invention is use for because if there was know camera people would not be able to take picture for memorable moments and they help with newspaper and other things like that.

  4. Alexander Fleming - Penicillin

    Fleming discovered Penicillin and its powers by accident. the discovery of this medicine is very important as it has been reponsible for saving many people's life and is refered to as an "infection-fighting agent of enormous potency".

  5. Rosalind Franklin

    Although James Watson and Francis Crick are famous for having discovered DNA, the two men where not entirely responsible.
    Rosalind was a British biophysicist who was trained as a chemist and specialized in X-ray crystallography. She made important contributions to the scientific understanding of the molecular structures of coal and graphite and, using X-ray diffraction, DNA, RNA and viruses. The DNA work achieved the most fame. By using a technique called X-ray diffraction, Franklin obtained results which led to the realization that a DNA molecule consists of an intertwined double helix of atoms. An X-ray diffraction experiment directs a beam of X-rays through a sample of a substance onto a screen. A pattern of spots is formed. This is recorded, and used to calculate the arrangement of atoms in the sample. She worked on DNA in the Medical Research Council Biophysics Unit at King's College, London, using her expertise in dealing with amorphous materials. She recorded a photograph that Maurice Wilkins, the Assistant Director, showed to James Watson and Francis Crick, who realized that it supported the idea of a double helix structure for DNA. Watson, from Harvard, was a visiting fellow at Cambridge, in the same laboratory as Crick. Wilkins, Crick and Watson were awarded a Nobel prize jointly this was after Franklin's death and as a result was not recognised for helping discover DNA. Withought her x-ray diffraction Watson and Crick wouldnt have been able to dicover DNA.

  6. Albert Einstein- Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921

    "The Manhattan Project" was the project of making the atomic bomb!which took science from the laboratory into combat with a new weapon the nuclear weapons.

    I think this was the biggest mistake ever made in the history of histories because if they get into the wrong hands they as it already has nuclear weapons can cause mass destruction and wipe out a nations I 1945 the bomb nick named "little boy " was first used in combat in world war two in Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    60,000 people died of radiation poisoning - an average of 8,500 a year. Maybe as many as 200,000 people died as a result of 'Little Boy'.

    people today who live in area where the atomic bombs were dropped suffer with deformities.
    Albert Einstein did not directly participate in the invention of the atomic bomb when he published or created his equation
    " E=mc2"
    this powerful equation has changed the world so much and countries go to war due to suspicions of other countries building nuclear weapons!

    In my opinion the biggest mistake Albert Einstein has ever made!

  7. Alexander Graham Bell - He was a scientist, inventor, engineer & invented the first practical telephone.
    The telephone is an instrument that converts voice and sound signals into electrical impulses for transmission by wire to a different location, where another telephone receives the electrical impulses and turns them back into recognizable sounds. He built the first telephone that transmitted electrically the human voice.
    Does anybody in the world not know about telephones,almost everyone has, has used, or will get a telephone. One of the worlds greatest ways of communication which later lead onto mobile phones and had influences on laptops and computers in a great way (all after the invention of the telephone in 1875) I do not believe that they are harmful in anyway, although mobile phones may be (but thats a whole other story) I do believe the telephone is one of the greatest inventions as it has allowed world communication.

    martin cooper was the person to make the mobile/cell phone. he wanted people to be able to carry around a phone with them. but you could argue that he didnt make this invention because somebody had already make the telephone years before and he had just carried on from there

  9. Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen - The discovery of the use of X-Rays.

    Though he only made this discovery accidentally while experimenting with his cathode ray generator, it is non the less one of the most important discoveries in medical history. Without x-rays, it would be extremely difficult to diagnose most injuries and illnesses today, so it is vital to all medical science.

  10. marie curie-She was a pioneer in the field of radioactivity,

    creation of a theory of radioactivity (a term coined by her), techniques for isolating radioactive isotopes, and the discovery of two new elements, polonium and radium. It was also under her personal direction that the world's first studies were conducted into the treatment of neoplasms ("cancers"), using radioactive isotopes. and it is very important discovery because it has been used to safe so many lifes.

  11. James Bolsover (1850-1931)

    James was the inventor of the soap. Each bar of soap was embossed with the image of some owls above a bee. This was not symbolism of wisdom and work, but a pun on the name Bolsover, "Bee with owls over", get it?

    If soap had not been invented we would be living in a world of filthy bodies and stench. This is the greatest invention of all times

  12. The insulin was first isolated in 1916 by the Romanian scientist Nicolae Paulescu.

    Four years later, two Canadian scientists Banting and Macleod won the Nobel prize for inventing insulin.

    I think this invention is extremely important to me as this treatment keeps me alive! as i have to use it everyday.

    Dynamite was invented by Alfred Nobel and was the first safely manageable explosive stronger than black powder. Nobel obtained patents for his invention: in England on 7 May 1867 and in Sweden on 19 October 1867.[2] He originally sold dynamite as "Nobel's Blasting Powder". After its introduction, dynamite rapidly gained popularity as a safe alternative to gunpowder and nitroglycerin.

  14. adding on to the dynamite i think this is a important discovery because it has lead to the creation of other explosives all used to help safely knock down building, army, mining and destroying of important information. ( maybe even keep warm x'D)

  15. Steven Sasson invented the digital camera-

    His invention began in 1975 with a very broad assignment from his supervisor at Eastman Kodak Company.

    He set about constructing the digital circuitry from scratch, using oscilloscope measurements as a guide. There were no images to look at until the entire prototype - an 8-pound (3.6-kilogram), toaster-size contraption - was assembled. In December 1975, Sasson and his chief technician persuaded a lab assistant to pose for them. The black-and-white image, captured at a resolution of .01 megapixels (10,000 pixels), took 23 seconds to record onto a digital cassette tape and another 23 seconds to read off a playback unit onto a television. Then it popped up on the screen.

    "You could see the silhouette of her hair," Sasson said. But her face was a blur of static. "She was less than happy with the photograph and left, saying 'You need work,"' he said. But Sasson already knew the solution: reversing a set of wires, the assistant's face was restored.

  16. Albert Einstein created the theory of general relativity.

    "For example, it implies the existence of black holes—regions of space in which space and time are distorted in such a way that nothing, not even light, can escape—as an end-state for massive stars."

    This was a huge discovery because we now know it is a stage that happens to a planet when it dies.
