If music be the food of love...play on

Theory of Knowledge is everywhere.

Theory of Knowledge applies to everything.

What types of 'ways of knowing' are expressed through music?
What forms of knowledge are located in songs?

Many songs are written about personal experience.
How far is experiential knowledge valid?
Is experiential knowledge more or less valid than scientific knowledge, say?

The music we like tends to mean something to us on a personal level.
Can we learn through empathy?
Can we learn through intuition?
Do we trust the opinion or message of someone we relate to more easily?
Should we?

Task

Post a few lines from your selected song
Tell us what it is and who it is by and where it is from
Explain why you selected the song
Post a few theory of knowledge style questions based on the song

Make some somment on the questions and ideas expressed above.

  1. Tell me what has become of my rights
Am I invisible because you ignore me?
Your proclamation promised me free liberty, now
I'm tired of bein' the victim of shame
They're throwing me in a class with a bad name
I can't believe this is the land from which I came
You know I do really hate to say it
    The government don't wanna see
    But if Roosevelt was livin'
He wouldn't let this be, no, no

This was written by Micheal Jackson.

I choose this song because it really touches my heart and it really means a lot to me as a person and i can also relate with Micheal as i listen to this song.Because if we as people want to change this world we should start with ourselfs so we know what it feels like when we make the change and by doing this people around us will start doing that and evetually the world will change its ways because there no turning back once we have bad bad decisions in life.
we cant all keep living with a blind eye pretending not see what is happening in this world and just thinking about ourselves by just making change by giving people rights and a voice

-How true is it to say Am I invisible because you ignore me?

-how true is it for micheal jackson to ask what has become of his rights ?

-Do we agree with the statementYour proclamation promised me free liberty?

  2. Michael Jackson - Earth Song

    What about sunrise
    What about rain
What about all the things That you said we were to gain
What about killing fields Is there a time
What about all the things That you said was yours and mine
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we've shed before
Did you ever stop to notice The crying Earth the weeping shores?

What have we done to the world
    Look what we've done
    What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son
What about flowering fields Is there a time
What about all the dreams That you said was yours and mine
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores!

I chose this song because it is relevant all over the world and is a situation, several situations that need to be resolved & will only be resolved if people take time in listen to the changes needed and make a difference. It is a personal favourite of mine and i this has a great positive influence on those who take time to listen to it!

How far is it true to say that Michael Jackson himself noticed that world needed to change from all different prospectives?

To what extent are these lyrics still relevant today and how far into the future will they still be relevant?

Is it fair to say that the point of saving the earth is better spoken in this song than on the news today?

  3. Justin Bieber - Kiss and tell

Now I can see it girl
    You aint gonna say nothing
    your lips are calling me
    like they wanna do something
    I feel the chemistry
    with everthing we make
a little kiss is a definite possibilty

Seen a couple of times had a couple of conversations
like you are a fly chick
    Play by the rules

just keep it quiet keep it on the hush
and what we do is between us

    so tell me, tell me
are you gonna kiss, kiss and tell
    then tell everybody
    that you got me twisted
    with your lips girl
are you gonna kiss and tell

When i first heard this song I really liked it,but later I found out it got me thinking of a lot of things about how it influences other young kids.It gave we awareness that at times we fall for things without the understanding of it.Although it still brings questions in my thoughts he is my favourite young singer.

How far true to say that if we kiss someone we will be able to tell that you have found your true love?Is that myth true?

To what extent are these young kids only going to kiss?

  4. 'Now sometimes the world tries to slap you
And it seems to love watching you fall
I wont lie to you, it's gonna happen
You got to pick yourself up and move on'

This was written by Slash and Chris Cornell, and the song is called Promise. I chose this song because I think there is times when it seems like the whole world is against us, and when we want to give up, but this song tells us to keep on going, through everything that happens, which we can all relate to, becuase it will happen to us at some point.

How true is it to say, the world does 'love watching you fall'?

Is it true to say we can always pick ourselves up and move on, without the help of other people?

  5. One By Metallica

    I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
    This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up I cannot see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please God, wake me

Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
    Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

The song's theme and lyrics are based on Dalton Trumbo's 1939 novel Johnny Got His Gun, telling the tale of a soldier whose body is severely damaged by a landmine. His arms, legs, eyes, mouth, nose and ears are gone and he is unable to see, speak, smell, or hear. His mind functions perfectly, however, leaving him trapped inside his own body. I chose this song because this song got me into rock/metal themed music and also got me into one of my favourite bands.

How true is it to say that we are living in reality?

To what extent can war effect people and contries?

  6. R kelly-money makes the world go round.

those who live the way that I live
    We came a long way
From wiping coal outta eyelids, to rap's hottest
    Fake Gazelles to black Pradas
Selling nicks to trey bags, to making hits like Kidada Jones' father
OG's would send me to the store with a dollar
Hit me with some wise advice for me to follow
Ain't nothing free in the world in life
No matter who you are, everybody got they price
And some cost more than other's
When you poor, it's like life ain't even worth living
But when you rich, it's every fat ass worth hittin'
With no chips, your drawers just stay on your hips
I play with the six cuz money make the whole world spin
But without the Franklin faces, you see who's your real friends
It's V-12's, honeys on the cell, bobbin' out the JBL.

I choose this song because it touches my heart,it make me think that most people value money more than life, cause most people see money as everything and they treat others without money like nothing, there is a proverb that say when there is money, there is friend but when there is no money there is no friend.most people sees that if there is no money, life is not worth living for.

How true is it to say that money makes the world go round.
To what extent can we say that without money there is no life.

  8. I wanna be a billionaire - Travis McCoy and Bruno Mars

I wanna be a billionaire so fricking bad
Buy all of the things I never had
Uh, I wanna be on the cover of Forbes magazine
Smiling next to Oprah and the Queen

Oh every time I close my eyes
I see my name in shining lights
A different city every night oh
I swear the world better prepare
    For when I’m a billionaire

Yeah I would have a show like Oprah
I would be the host of, everyday Christmas
    Give Travie a wish list
I’d probably pull an Angelina and Brad Pitt
And adopt a bunch of babies that ain’t never had sh-t
Give away a few Mercedes like here lady have this
And last but not least grant somebody their last wish
Its been a couple months since I’ve single so
You can call me Travie Claus minus the Ho Ho
Get it, hehe, I’d probably visit where Katrina hit
And damn sure do a lot more than FEMA did
Yeah can’t forget about me stupid
Everywhere I go Imma have my own theme music

I’ll be playing basketball with the President
    Dunking on his delegates
Then I’ll compliment him on his political etiquette
Toss a couple milli in the air just for the heck of it
But keep the fives, twentys (?) completely separate
And yeah I’ll be in a whole new tax bracket
We in recession but let me take a crack at it
I’ll probably take whatevers left and just split it up
So everybody that I love can have a couple bucks
And not a single tummy around me would know what hungry was
    Eating good sleeping soundly
I know we all have a similar dream
Go in your pocket pull out your wallet
And put it in the air and sing

I chose this song because it discusses how better off your life would be if everyone had money and the fact that no one would go hungry and that you could make your family happy: "not a single tummy around me would know what hungry was".. "grant somebody their last wish".

To what extent can we say that some of our theory of knowledge class will be billionaires one day

How far is it true to say money can bring you happiness

  9. Imagine there's no Heaven
    It's easy if you try
    No hell below us
    Above us only sky
    Imagine all the people
    Living for today

    Imagine there's no countries
    It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

    Imagine no possessions
    I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
    A brotherhood of man
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

i chose this song because i sometimes wonder if we can all ever truly live as one, without wars, greed or hunger as john lennon says, i severely doubt this a lot of times, but as we discussed in class, we may never know, in another thousand or 3 thousand years (if humans still exist by then). i was also slighty annoyed at the line about religion, because being raised as a christian, i think its very unfair to say the problems humans have at the moment are caused by religion?

    Questions;
How far is it true to say that humans will ever live in peace?

to what extent should be blame religions for problems in society?

  10. I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain
I only wanted one time to see you laughing
I only wanted to see you laughing in the purple rain

    Purple rain, purple rain
    Purple rain, purple rain
    Purple rain, purple rain
I only wanted to see you bathing in the purple rain

I never wanted to be your weekend lover
I only wanted to be some kind of friend, hey
Baby, I could never steal you from another
It's such a shame our friendship had to end

I picked this song because its a song that people can relate to with in relationships, it talks about a friendship that he might of led the girl on and he has to let her down gently by saying he only wanted to be friends.

to what extent is it true to say other people cause your pain and sorrow?

  11. You with the sad eyes
    Don't be discouraged
    Oh I realize
    It's hard to take courage
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all
    And the darkness, inside you
Can make you feel so small

But I see your true colors
    Shining through
    I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
    Your true colors
    True colors are beautiful,
    Like a rainbow

    Show me a smile then,
    Don't be unhappy, can't remember
When I last saw you laughing
If this world makes you crazy
And you've taken all you can bear
    You call me up
Because you know I'll be there

And I'll see your true colors
    Shining through
    I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
    Your true colors
    True colors are beautiful,
    Like a rainbow

the song i chose was Phil Collins - true colors

i chose this song because it has a deep meaning about people dont really show themselves to people and hes describing a person telling them to show there true colors and when they show them there beautiful.

how can we tell that people dont show there true colors?

to what extent is it true to say people are better when they show there true colors (personality etc.)

While I give your girl the eye, player please
    Lyrically, niggaz see, B.I.G.

I don't know what, they want from me
It's like the more money we come across
    The more problems we see
    [repeat 3X]
    What's goin on?
    What's goin on?
I don't know what, they want from me
It's like the more money we come across
    The more problems we see

To what extent do we agree that the paradox of our lives is 'the more money brings about more problems'?

How far do we agree that this statement depends on the way of living of the individual?

  14. Skin head, dead head
    Everybody gone bad
    Situation, aggravation
    Everybody allegation
In the suite, on the news
    Everybody dog food
    Bang bang, shot dead
    Everybody's gone mad

All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us
All I wanna say is that
They don't really care about us

This song is: Michael Jackson - They Don't Care About Us

I chose this song because I feel it is like a mirror of what is happening in everyday life and how true it is when it says "They don't really care about us"

To what extent are people going to realise that what they are doing is wrong?

How true is it to say that all the people that do bad things in the world like killing people don't think of the people they are hurting e.g. the victims family when they hurt/kill someone?

  15. unwritten by Natasha Beddingfield:

    Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
    Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten, yeah

i chose this song because it is a lyrcial poem encouraging people to think and discover theirself as a person and start taking control of their lives because the decisions they make influence their whole lfie.

how true is it to say..."today is where your book begins?" because it could be argued that your book began since the day you were born

how far do you agree that we are our own hinderance to prosperity?

  16. Never had I imagined
    living without your smile
    feeling knowing you, hear me
    it keeps me alive

and I know your shining down on me from heaven
like so many Friends we've lost along the way
and I know eventually we'll be together
    one sweet day
eventually I'll see you in heaven

    Darling I never showed you
    assumed you'd always be there
I took your presence for granted
    but I always cared
and I miss the love that we shared

This song is wrote by Mariah Carey and sung by both her and Boyz ll men. I chose this song because I like the lyrics and can relate to this as well as many other people. The song talks about loosing a loved one which happens to most individuals as we go through life.

How true is it to say that we will all be together 'one sweet day'?

To what extent to people believe there is life after death?

How far do you agree that we all can relate to this song as we all grieve over a loved one?

  17. Modern Strange Cowboy by GRANRODEO (English Translation)

Ready set Fly Away! Open Your Mind
    until your Momentum Rusts!
A composed face like from a Movie Star, an awesome Rock Star
    blows away the competition!
    We’re modern strange cowboy

Are you ready to the action?
There’s no wall infront of you!
    Do you have any function?
I order you Back to the fire

    It’s beyond description, it’s
    Insanity
I can’t ignore my own will,
    can’t mince matters.

    Embrace your own 39degree body,
    live on Cowboy!
Live as to not wilt your freshly sprouted flower!
    Live on Cowboy!
    Run through today Cowboy!

In a flash, the reservation on my deteriorating tomb,
is long yet short…but it’s my turn.
A strange Romantic person, a Mister who tends to confine himself…
This time it’s time to be talkative.
    We’re modern strange cowboy.

Are you ready for the action?
There’s no time to be crying!
How do you have any function?
    Custom get! Light your fire

My sensitivity will soon be exposed,
    Impaction
    I’m on alert for life
    I won’t walk with hesitation!

Cross the world with your action and raise your body temperature,
    Live on Cowboy
Surely the voice of my heart I heard is rollin’
    Live on Cowboy
    Ride on Cowboy

If I release my emotions into the countless stars,
my sound will come to understand everything right?
It might even grow or change!

    Embrace your own 39degree body,
    live on Cowboy!
Live as to not wilth your freshly sprouted flower!
    Live on Cowboy!

How should we think about living freely and not worry about things?

To what extent should we move forward in life if we never look back?

  18. Nickelback - If Today Was Your Last Day

My best friend gave me the best advice
He said each day's a gift and not a given right
Leave no stone unturned, leave your fears behind
And try to take the path less traveled by
That first step you take is the longest stride

If today was your last day
    And tomorrow was too late
Could you say goodbye to yesterday?
Would you live each moment like your last?
Leave old pictures in the past
    Donate every dime you have?
If today was your last day

Against the grain should be a way of life
What's worth the prize is always worth the fight
Every second counts 'cause there's no second try
So live like you'll never live it twice
Don't take the free ride in your own life

If today was your last day
    And tomorrow was too late
Could you say goodbye to yesterday?
Would you live each moment like your last?
Leave old pictures in the past
    Donate every dime you have?
Would you call old friends you never see?
    Reminisce old memories
    Would you forgive your enemies?
Would you find that one you're dreamin' of?
Swear up and down to God above
That you finally fall in love
If today was your last day

If today was your last day
Would you make your mark by mending a broken heart?
You know it's never too late to shoot for the stars
    Regardless of who you are
    So do whatever it takes
'Cause you can't rewind a moment in this life
Let nothin' stand in your way
Cause the hands of time are never on your side

If today was your last day
    And tomorrow was too late
Could you say goodbye to yesterday?

Would you live each moment like your last?
Leave old pictures in the past
    Donate every dime you have?
Would you call old friends you never see?
    Reminisce old memories
    Would you forgive your enemies?
Would you find that one you're dreamin' of?
Swear up and down to God above
That you finally fall in love
If today was your last day

This is a very emotional and inspirational song by one of my favourite bands of all time. I chose this song because it is very personal to me and a close friend of mine and it has helped us a lot through hard times.

How true is it to say that today is NOT your last day?

How do we know that each day's a gift and not a given right?

What would you do with your last day?

  19. U2 - One
    Is it getting better?
Or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you now?
    You got someone to blame
    You say

    One love
    One life
    When it's one need
    In the night
    One love
    We get to share it
    Leaves you baby if you
    Don't care for it

I chose this song because it discusses how you only get one life, and you should live it without blaming other people for your mistakes because you dont get another chance at it.

-to what extent is it fair to say that your problems are made easier on you if you blame someone else?

-how true is it to say that other people cause your problems?

  20. Lyrics to Before The Worst :
It’s been a while since the two of us talked
About a week since the day that you walked
Knowing things would never be the same
With your empty heart and mine full of pain

So explain to me, how it came to this
Let’s take it back to the night we kissed
It was Dublin city on a Friday night
With vodkas and coke, I was Guinness all night

We were sitting with our backs against the world
Saying things that we thought but never heard
Who would have thought it would end up like this?

But everything we talked about is gone
And the only chance we have of moving on
Was trying to take it back before it all went wrong

    Before the worst
    Before we met
Before our hearts decided it’s time to love again
    Before today
    Before too long
Let’s try and take it back before it all went wrong

There was a time that we’d stay up all night
Best friends, yeah, talking til the daylight
Took the joys alongside the pain
With not much to lose but so much to gain

Are you hearing me? Cuz I don’t wanna miss
That you would drift on memory bliss
It was Grafton street, on a rainy night
I was down on one knee and you were mine for life

We were thinking we would never be apart
With your name tattooed across my heart
Who would have thought it would end up like this?

But everything we talked about is gone
And the only chance we have of moving on
Was trying to take it back before it all went wrong

    Before the worst
    Before we met
Before our hearts decided it’s time to love again
    Before today
    Before too long
Let’s try and take it back before it all went wrong

I have chosen this song as I love the script and it is a cleverly written song about real feelings. It is about a man and woman that were in love, and they are reminiscing the time that they had together, they are trying to find out when it went wrong and if they can take their mistakes back and fall back in love again.

How true is it to say that all love will end at some point?

To what extent is it fair to say that peoples feelings change and that people grow apart?

This is from rachel pickup mr pope, i'm posting it off jordan's computer because mine is broke

  21. "And these wars, they can't be won
And these wars, they can't be won
And do you want them to go on
    And on and on
    Why split these states
When there can be only one?"

The song is called "United States of Eurasia" and is sung by the band Muse.
I chose this line as, in the world is seems countries resolve their differents and are always in wars or are fighting.

    Can wars we won?
Can countries for once not have to fight?
